Mitch Evan's dedicates Monaco win to Sir Colin Giltrap | Weekend Wrap-up

Apr 29, 2024

Kiwi duo Mitch Evans and Nick Cassidy triumph at Monaco E-Prix, while Scott McLaughlin dominates IndyCar in the United States - your weekend motorsport wrap-up.

Formula E

Mitch Evans led his teammate Nick Cassidy to a historic Kiwi 1-2 at the Monaco E-Prix.

Evans has been chasing what has proved to be an elusive victory in Monaco for nearly 10 years, starting with his time in GP2.

“Today has been amazing. A one-two for Jaguar is incredible, but to do it in Monaco makes it even more special,” said Evans. “I’ve led the race here in Monaco many times and have achieved podiums on the streets of Monte Carlo but to have my first win of Monaco and of the season has come at such a good time for me.”

Evans then went on to dedicate the victory to the late Sir Colin Giltrap, who supported Evans from early in his career.

“Most importantly, this win is for Colin Giltrap and his family. Colin has supported my career for over 20 years, and I wouldn’t be racing and following my dreams without him.”

The victory was a result of brilliant teamwork between the two Kiwis. Swapping positions over the course of the race to support each other’s strategies, ultimately it’d be Evans in prime position while Cassidy held the chasing cars of Stoffel Vandoorne and Jean-Eric Vergne at bay.

NASCAR Xfinity

It was another weekend of learning for Shane van Gisbergen during his first outing at Dover International Speedway.

A tricky qualifying had SVG starting the race from P31, right in the chaotic midfield.

It was a hugely eventful race, with crashes, fires, and rain interrupting proceedings and pushing the race in to double-overtime. SVG spent much of the race fighting to stay on the lead lap, then fighting to get back on the lead lap after falling off.

He would achieve this, getting back on the lead lap in the double-overtime period and finishing the race in P18.

IndyCar

Scott McLaughlin had a dominant weekend during IndyCar’s outing at Barber Motorsports Park in Alabama.

After taking pole in qualifying, McLaughlin was able to convert this to victory after an leading majority of the race’s 90 laps.

Safety cars and yellow flags conspired to make it a trickier victory than it needed to be, but McLaughlin kept his cool on an aggressive 3-stop pit-strategy to bring his Team Penske car home just ahead of teamate Will Power.

This victory will provide McLaughlin some much needed points after the Penske cars were disqualified from last weekend’s Long Beach race for push-to-pass violations.

Scott Dixon battled in the mid pack for most of the race to cross the line in P15.

Indy NXT

Callum Hedge had his second outing in Indy NXT this weekend, as the feeder series was at Barber Motorsports Park in support of IndyCar.

It was a strong weekend for the young Kiwi, qualifying in P10, the converting this in to a top-10 finish in P9.

Hedge’s pace is getting stronger as he learns the new car, with Indy NXT returning for a double header at the Indy Road Course in two weeks.
